HPU Drops Home Game to Sul Ross

 The Howard Payne football team found themselves in an early 14-0 deficit that they could not recover from. The Yellow Jackets received their first loss on the season 14-31 to visiting Sul Ross State University at Gordon Wood Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Sul Ross received the ball first and scored on their opening drive. On the ensuing kickoff HPU fumbled the kick reception and Sul Ross State recovered the ball in the endzone for a 14-0 lead just three minutes into the game.

The Yellow Jackets put together a strong opening drive but missed on a 36-yard field goal attempt. Neither team scored again till Sul Ross State had a 3-yard TD run from QB Dominque Carson with :10 seconds remaining in the first half.

Sul Ross State scored on the opening possession of the 3rd quarter on a 76-yard TD pass from Carson to Rod Jefferson.

The Jackets pulled it together on the next possession and scored on a 1-yard run by Walter Pam capping a 10 play 71-yard drive.

Howard Payne on their next possession scored in the air on a 13-yard Zach Hubbard pass to Trevor Kleine.

The Jackets were unable to score again and Sul Ross State added a 20-yard field goal with 9:31 left in the game to seal the result.

Sul Ross State rushed for 248 total yards led by QB Dominque Carson with 107. Laurence Smith followed with 65. Carson was 6 of 11 passing for 168 yards and no interceptions. Rod Jefferson had four catches for 143 yards.

HPU QB Zach Hubbard was 23 of 46 for 210 yards and one TD. Brandon Young had 8 carries for 37 yards and WR Tre Mason had 5 catches for 52 yards.

Allen Dixon led all with 13 tackles. Four other HPU players had 11 tackles, Jake Dezell, Chase Reneau, Dustin McClure, and Kevin Reyna.

The Jackets fall to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in ASC play, while Sul Ross State picks up their first win of the year and is now 1-3, 1-1 in ASC.

Howard Payne will travel to Seguin to play Texas Lutheran University nest Saturday at 2:00 pm.
