ABILENE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons’ football team dropped its fourth straight game with a 23-7 loss to No. 3 Mary Hardin-Baylor in American Southwest Conference action at Shelton Field on Saturday afternoon.

Mary Hardin-Baylor took the opening kickoff and went 64 yards in 15 plays, but had to settle for a 23-yard field goal from Alan Munoz to take a 3-0 with 7:38 to play in the first half. The Cowboys were forced to punt on their only possession of the first quarter.

UMHB then went 84 yards in 12 plays and Kyle Noack hit Pi’Dadro Davis on a 10-yard touchdown pass to cap the drive and make it 10-0 with 11:43 to play in the half.

The Cowboys then drove the ball down the field but turned the ball over on downs at the UMHB 15. On the very next play, HSU’s L.C. Cisneroz intercepted LiDarral Bailey but again the Cowboys had to punt.

UMHB then took the ball 43 yards in seven plays and Munoz hit a 51-yard field goal to make it 13-0 with one second to play in the half.

Quincy Daniels scampered 39 yards for a touchdown on UMHB’s first possession of the second half to make it 20-0. After HSU was forced to punt again, Brett Parker fumbled the punt and the Cowboys recovered at the UMHB 42.

HSU then went 42 yards in five plays and Taylor Byrd found Justice Baker on a 28-yard touchdown pass. Munoz hit another 22-yard field goal for UMHB to make it 23-7 early in the fourth quarter to round out the scoring.

UMHB rolled up 452 yards of offense, including 327 yards on the ground, but turned the ball over three times. HSU managed just 235 yards of offense. Byrd finished the day 7-for-20 for 130 yards and a touchdown. He was harassed by the UMHB defensive line as he was sacked three times and forced to scramble several other times.

Bailey had 151 yards rushing for UMHB and Daniels added 145.

Shelton Rainey had 11 tackles and Roy Gamboa added 10 for the Cowboys. Javicz Jones had 13 tackles for UMHB.

The Cowboys are now 1-4 on the year and 0-3 in ASC play. UMHB improved to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in ASC action. HSU will play at East Texas Baptist next week.
