"He's a wonderful friend, he's an absolutely fascinating and interesting person, said Jess Phillips, a longtime friend of Bob Green." He loves this town and everybody here loves him."

Bob Green has lived in Albany his entire life. He is a rancher and a friend to everyone he meets. He's also my grandfather. Bob was recently diagnosed with a form of Leukemia that requires regular blood transfusions and chemotherapy.

"We were scared to death," Phillips said when he learned of Bob's diagnosis.

He's a longtime friend of Bob's and after hearing of his condition, he knew there was something he could do.

"As soon as I found out he needed blood, I went over to the Meek Blood Center in Abilene and I donated blood within three days," Phillips said.

Phillips decided that the Centers upcoming blood drive in Albany should be held in honor of Bob.

"It not only helps Bob, but it helps everybody in Shackelford County," Phillips said.

Toni Hargis, with the Meek Blood Center, says they always accept donations, and remember those given for a special cause.

"We are in a desperate need of blood all the time, every type of blood, Hargis said. "For a community to come in like this and so many people to donate for one person is awesome."

But residents say that's just how Albany is. Over 80 blood donations were collected in only one day.
