Cowboys Continue To Roll

ALPINE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons came to Jackson Field Saturday and put up 20 unanswered points in the first half en route to a 29-6 ASC victory over Sul Ross.
The loss comes off the heels of last weekend’s season-ending leg injury to speedster Dominque Carson.
The Lobos outperformed the visitors in many categories including a 15-13 first down margin, 282 yards on the rush compared to HSU’s 140 and averaged 4.7 yards per run while holding the Cowboys to 3.3.
It was the pass that Hardin-Simmons proved deadly with 212 yards through the air. Sully was held to a mere 28.
Laurence Smith led the ground attack for Sul Ross netting 95 yards off of seven carries while fullback Cameron Holliness sported 85 yards off of 17 runs.
Earnest Jones led the defense with 14 tackles with a fumble recovery and a 15-yard return.
The Cowboys punched the board first on their opening drive as Taylor Byrd found Thomas Labian on a 77-yard touchdown pass. The extra point kick by Alex Wymore was blocked but Hardin-Simmons led 6-0 just a minute and ten seconds into the game.
Byrd went to Labian to start the second period, this time on a 64-yard strike. Wymore’s kick cleared the uprights with the Cowboys ahead 13-0 with 10:19 left in the second quarter.
The Cowboys closed the half at 1:18 as Byrd hit Justin Baker on a 58-yard toss. The kick by Wymore sent the visitors to the break up 20-0.
Hardin-Simmons went with Wymore on a 31-yard field goal midway through the third to give the Cowboys a 23-0 advantage at 8:28.
The Lobos put up their only score of the afternoon as Alex LoVan scampered four yards after a three-play, 67-yard drive. The two-point conversion failed on the pass as Sully trailed 23-6.
HSU capped the victory with 10:19 remaining in the game as Roy Gamboa recovered a Lobo fumble and returned it 23 yards into the Sul Ross end zone. Wymore’s kick missed wide to the right with Hardin-Simmons sporting a 29-6 lead.
The Cowboy defense shutdown the Lobos although Sully had its chance with two trips inside the HSU ten yard line.
Sul Ross falls to 2-5 for the season and 2-3 in American Southwest Conference competition. The Cowboys improve to 4-4 and 3-3.
The Lobos travel east to Pineville, Louisiana next Saturday for a 1:00 PM conference game with Louisiana College.
