ABILENE, Texas - Ron Holmes' 20th season as McMurry's basketball coach
began with a 42-point victory over Baptist Bible College at Kimbrell Arena
Monday night. Six player scored in double figures for McMurry with Jeremie
Hart's 22 points leading the way and Robert Moreno's 10 assists helped pace
McMurry's 66 percent shooting effort.
McMurry led 47-31 at the half, but stepped on the gas pedal in the second
period hitting 27 of 33 shots. Hart was 8 of 11 from the floor and 6 of 10 from
the free-throw line but also had an all-around game with six boards and five
assists. Tommy Lane had 15 points and eight rebounds, Rickey Burney had 14
points, Tim Harrison had a double-double with 13 points and 11 boards and Jamal
Anene chipped in 11.
Baptist Bible shot 42 percent for the game and balanced its scoring attack
with four players in double figures. A.J. Watson scored 12 of his 14 points in
the first half to lead the Patriots, Caleb Thomas had 13, Bobby Hughes scored 11
and Jerome Small's 10 points accompanied a team-high eight rebounds.
McMurry dominated the paint and the transition game outscoring the visiting
Patriots 46-12 and winning the points-in-the-paint battle 74-32. Neither team
took care of the ball but the Patriots suffered 32 turnovers, which turned into
34 points for the home team. McMurry had 25 turnovers in the season-opener and
shot just 18 of 33 from the free-throw line. However, the athleticism of
McMurry's roster and size differential played to its favor and Baptist Bible
never held a lead.
McMurry returns to action Friday at 5:30 p.m. against Ohio Northern in
Chicago, Ill. at Wheaton College's Lee Pfund Classic. The Patriots fell to 4-2
on the season and play Abilene Christian Tuesday night at Moody Coliseum.
