A tradition almost a century old is keeping the old west alive in the Big Country.

For almost 20 years, Michael Martin Murphey has been coming to participate in the Cowboys Christmas Ball.  The Cowboys Christmas Ball celebrated it is 75th anniversary this weekend. It's held here at Pioneer Hall every year.

Organizer Suanne Holtman says it's not just a dance, but a reenactment of the first ball in 1885.  Murphey says performing at such a time honored tradition is an honor. It's a chance to walk into the past and perform songs that have been around for decades, and share them with others

Holtman says the Cowboy Christmas Ball is a family tradition. It's one she hopes will inspire her granddaughter like it has inspired her.

The dance is held every year at Pioneer Hall near Anson the weekend before Christmas.
