HSU Sweeps ASC Basketball Doubleheader

 Both HSU Cowboys and Cowgirls left the Mabee Complex with victories.

HSU Cowboys 85  East Texas Baptist 75

ABILENE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons’ men’s basketball team hit 15 3-pointers en route to a 85-75 win over East Texas Baptist in American Southwest Conference action at the Mabee Complex on Thursday evening.

 

HSU had 11 3-pointers in the first half but ETBU shot 48 percent in the first half and HSU led just 40-36 at halftime. Freshman John Derr had five 3-pointers in the first half.

 

The Cowboys hit a 13-4 run midway through the second half to open up a 60-47 lead with 11:16 to play. Derek Bryant hit back-to-back 3-pointers and Carlos Singer capped the run with a 3-pointer. From then on the Cowboys never led by less than double digits.

 

Casey Riddle led the Cowboys with 19 points and he added nine assists and seven rebounds. Derr had 16 points and Aaron Thornton chipped in 10, all in the second half. HSU had 11 players play and they all scored. Seven players hit a 3-pointer and eight players had five or more points.

 

ETBU was led by James Morman’s 21 points. Deba Egharevba added 16 points and Josh Chambers kicked in 10.

 

The Cowboys are now 2-9 on the year and 2-5 in ASC play. ETBU fell to 5-6 overall and 4-3 in league play. HSU will host LeTourneau on Saturday at 3 p.m.


HSU Cowgirls 90  East Texas Baptist  63

ABILENE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons’ women’s basketball team improved to 5-6 overall and 2-6 in American Southwest Conference action with a 90-63 win over East Texas Baptist, Thursday night at the Mabee Complex.

 

The Cowgirls may have played their best basketball of the season in the second half as HSU outscored ETBU 57-36 in the second half, after leading 33-27 at halftime.

 

HSU used a 19-2 run from the 16:30 mark to the 11:55 mark to put the game away. Senior point guard Bo Warm started the run with a 3-pointer, Becky Taylor then scored four straight, Jasmine Lewis five straight including a 3-point play, Warm hit a free throw Lindsey Newcombe had a 3-point play and Angela Newcombe had a lay-up. All five starters scored during the knockout run.

 

Lewis led five Cowgirls in double figures with a career-best 18 points. Lindsey Newcombe had 15, Angela Newcombe had 13 and Becky Taylor had 12. Freshman guard Coco Cartwright came off the bench to score 13 points and also had four assists and four rebounds. She hit three 3-pointers in the game.

 

ETBU (4-7, 3-4 ASC) was led by Emil Leek’s 11 points and LaToya Josey added 10.

 

The Cowgirls will host LeTourneau on Saturday at 1 p.m.
