June Cooke, age 85, died on Wednesday, September 19, 2007 at Wesley Court.
June was born in Abilene on July 10, 1922, to the late Ross and Marguerite Gregg. June graduated from Abilene High School in 1937 and went on to graduate from Hardin-Simmons University in 1942. There she was a Cowgirl with a double major in English and Spanish.
June was married to Horace L. Cooke for 59 years. During their life together, June and Horace raised three sons: Raymond "Rusty", David and Gregg. In 1974 they opened Abilene's first "health food" store, The Natural Food Center. June actively managed the center for 25 years dispensing -- in equal parts -- good will and advice to customers, friends and neighbors.
Lifelong members of St. Paul United Methodist Church, June with Horace also enjoyed bowling leagues, square dancing clubs, and Bridge clubs - raising their family, being active citizens and contributing to our community. June also participated for many years in the Abilene Woman's Club.
June is survived by her husband, Horace, her son and wife, Rusty and Pattie of El Paso, her son and wife David and Michele of Lexington, Massachusetts, daughter-in-law Melanie of Dallas, four grandchildren, Bryan and his wife Jennifer, James, Clara and Stephen and two great-grandchildren, Caroline and Allison. In addition to her parents, June was preceded in death by a brother George, a sister Mamie, and her son Gregg.
A memorial service for June Cooke will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, September 24 at St. Paul United Methodist Church. Visitation will be on Sunday, September 23, at the Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory St. from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
