Cyrus Gray Vies for Chiefs Running Back

ST JOSEPH, Mo--The Kansas City Chiefs started their last week of training camp Monday after winning their first exhibition game 27-17 against Arizona.

KOLR10's Nick Carboni and Justin Dougherty are in St. Joe with the team:

"Training camp as always a proving ground for young players both trying to make the team and also trying to establish themselves on the depth chart, right?," Carboni notes.

"Yea, there's a guy that the Chiefs drafted on the third day of the draft in round six. His name is Cyrus Gray. Gray really didn't make an appearance until the fourth quarter against the Cardinals where he rushed for a seven yard touchdown and it made the score 27-17," says Dougherty.  "And that's when he got on the boards. Texas A&M fans know exactly who he is because in his four years as an Aggie he rushed for over 3,000 yards. Right now in Kansas City he's back to square one trying to make a name for himself."

"When you get the opportunity you need to make the opportunity count," said Cyrus Gray. "So it was a blessing and an honor to score especially at Arrowhead. That experience humbled me so I need to continue to work."

Cyrus Gray is listed as the fourth running back on the depth chart. He's trying to break that rotation there and get into that third spot behind Jamal Charles and Peyton Hillis. If he has preseason games like Saturday night you never know.

"I'm going to stick with the offense here," Carboni says.  "The Chiefs went and got Kevin Boss from the Raiders. He was cut after one year of his four year deal. Of course he won a Super Bowl title with the New York Giants back in 2007-08. They're going with that tight end tantum that's wildly popular throughout the league. But I want to talk about an unproven tight end on the roster Steve Maneri. It's his third year of professional football, but it's his first year of pro football as a tight end. He was an offensive lineman. He played his college football at Temple where he was a tight end and did very well there. He came into the league as a tackle with the Houston Texans."

"There are a lot of challenges definitely," said Steve Maneri. "Becoming a tackle last year and the switch to tight end has been a challenge. It's just reading coverages, getting open. And
