Clyde Dixon (Tommy) Allen

Clyde Dixon (Tommy) Allen, 90, of Coleman, died Saturday, September 29, 2007 at his residence. A Memorial service will be held at 2:00 Wednesday at the United Christian and Presbyterian Church, 1609 S. Commercial Avenue, Coleman with Dr. George B. Gordon officiating. Visitation will follow the service at the church. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Clyde Dixon (Tommy) Allen was born April 24, 1917 in Hillsboro, Texas, the third son of Thurman Jackson Allen and Myrtle Olga Tomlinson Allen. He grew up in Coleman, graduating from Coleman High School in 1933. After graduating from Texas Christian University in 1937 he returned to Coleman and joined his father in their insurance business, Allen and Allen. He volunteered for the US Navy in 1942, serving his country in both the European and Pacific theaters, receiving the Bronze Star for valor. He was honorably discharged in 1945 with the rank of Lieutenant.

He returned to Coleman after the war, rejoining the insurance agency and resuming his involvement in community affairs. He married Doris Adelle McIntosh in Brownwood on April 10, 1955. Mr. Allen was an active member of First Christian Church (now United Christian and Presbyterian), serving as Chairman of the Church Board on many occasions, and as an Elder, adult Sunday School teacher, and choir member.

Mr. Allen was on the Board of Holiday Hill Nursing Home for 55 years, serving as secretary for most of that time. He was a founder of the Coleman County Foundation and served on the board of the Abilene Foundation. He was instrumental in re-organizing the local hospital, and served as the first chairman of the board of Coleman County Medical Center. He also served on the Coleman County Industrial Board and was a member of the Rotary Club.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Allen of Coleman; son, Jack Allen of McLean, Virginia; daughter, Dorothy Kellogg and son-in-law, James Kellogg of Alexandria, Virginia; grandsons, Allen and Stephen Kellogg of Alexandria; sisters-in-law, Dorothy McIntosh of Brownwood and Doris J. Allen of Houston; two nieces Patricia White of Austin and Suzanne Gordon of Kansas City, Kansas, and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, William Edward Allen and Weldon Jackson Allen.
