Giving blood not only saves others' lives, but possibly your own as a donor.

A study by the American Medical Association showed that adults ages 43 to 61 who gave blood every six months, had fewer heart attacks and strokes.

Also, BloodCenters.org says that excessive iron in the blood is thought to contribute to heart disease, and donating flushes out some of that iron.

Frances Baker with Meek Blood Center says those aren't the only benefits to donating.

Blood donors should give every few months to reap health benefits.
