Mayoral Race Returns in Four Arkansas Cities

Four Arkansas cities were electing mayors Tuesday night.

In North Little Rock, the leading two candidates appeared headed for a runoff with 90-percent of the returns counted.

Tracy Steele led the voting with 48-percent of the vote to Joe Smith's 41-percent, with 8-percent for Mark Clinton and 3-percent for John Parker.

The winner replaces long-serving Mayor Patrick Henry Hays.

In Pine Bluff, Debe Hollingsworth was leading the other eight candidates with a comfortable margin of 49-percent, giving an apparent sound defeat to incumbent Mayor Carl Redus. He was second with 18-percent and Thelma Walker was third with 10-percent.

The other candidates and their totals:
Steven Mays: 7-percent
Clarence Davis: 6-percent
Peter Daniels: 3-percentKent Broughton: 3-percent
John James: 3-percent
Tim Whisenhunt: 0-percent

In Fayetteville, voters gave Mayor Lioneld Jordan another term.

Former Mayor Dan Coody conceded late Tuesday night, speaking to supporters at his watch party, "We've really enjoyed working with everyone. It's a great community and thank you all very much," he told the crowd when conceding the race to Mayor Jordan.

Vote totals in by 11 o'clock Tuesday night showed Jordan winning with 62-percent of the vote to Coody's 38-percent.

In Conway, Tab Townsell appeared headed to a re-election victory with 54-percent of the vote to 39-percent for Elsinger and 7-percent for Herrold.
