DWI cases are some of the hardest cases for the Police and prosecutors to handle. Which is why it's important for them to stay up to date on the latest law changes across the country.
"It's always good to keep updated on how things are going and how the laws are changing to see how we can be more effective in prosecuting the DWI's," James Eidson, District Attorney said.
Friday afternoon, Anheuser-Busch sponsored a special live satellite conference, that was broadcasted to 31 cities in Texas, as well as New Mexico and Saint Louis.
"We gathered together prosecutors, law enforcement officers and people that are actively involved in stopping and preventing drunk drivers," Jim Hicks, Assistant District Attorney said.
One of the biggest topics of the conference was how to deal with people who try to cover up that they are drunk. They also talked about drunk drivers that attempt to play the system. Some drunk drivers will refuse to take Breathalyzer tests to avoid having evidence against them.
"We hope that when they leave here, they will incorporate this into their training, so it's not just the officers that are here, but all the officers can get the benefit when they take it back home," Eidson said.
According to Hicks, even though the number of people arrested for DWIs has increased, the number of deaths has decreased. Which shows officers are moving in the right direction.
"The important thing to remember is that in the last few years the number of deaths have dropped dramatically, because of the prosecution," Hicks said.
They hope that conferences like this will help officers not only catch more drunk drivers, but also make sure they get the proper punishment.
