"Even if it's at my house, leaning up against my front door. I chain it up, just in case," Hurley said.
There are dozens of students like Sam, that have recently had their bike stolen from the campus area. Since the start of the semester, 36 bikes have been reported stolen to campus police. 12 of those, have been in the last 3 weeks.
"It's a significant jump, from what we normally see," Ellison said.
Jimmy Ellison is the Chief of Police at ACU and said they have analyzed the thefts, to see how they can stop them. They think the person who is stealing the bikes, is coming onto campus with the sole intent of doing so.
"We are trying to increase our patrol presence in the some of the areas were have seen a significant increase," Ellison said.
They've even found locks that have been cut, using a special tool.
"I noticed that there are more bikes on campus this semester, so maybe the bike thieves noticed that as well," Hurley said.
Sam said he is also taking a cycling class right now and every week another person in his class can't participate, because their bike was stolen.
“I think we've had at least 4 or 5 over the course of the semester that just don't have a bike anymore," Hurley said.
ACU police are encouraging people to keep an eye out for suspicious behavior around the bike areas and report to it.
