The Abilene school district is starting the school year nearly $2 million in the red.
Monday night, the school board adopted a budget for the 2008-2009 school year. That budget is about $2 million less than last year. The district made quite a few cuts to get an operating budget of $113 million this year.
Also at the meeting, the AISD board set the tax rate. It is down a fraction from last year.
The Wylie school board is increasing the tax rate. Because of high student enrollment and high land appraisal value, the district says they're at a good spot to raise rates. The district's new tax rate of a $1.13 is higher than last year's $1.09 rate.
The board also adopted a higher budget this year as well. Wylie Superintendent Joey Light also says the district plans to use the extra funds to increase salaries.
