High Fiber Diet Linked To Longevity

By: VERTEXNews
Updated: February 16, 2011
People who include more fiber in their diets tend to live longer.  That's the bottom line of a new study by the National Institutes of Health.

Researchers say the type of fiber found in whole grains, beans, fruits, nuts and vegetables aids in digestion, lowers cholesterol and improves blood glucose levels.

Previous studies have linked increased fiber with lowering the risk of heart disease, diabetes and some cancers.

But the NIH study of nearly 390,000 people concludes that a high-fiber diet reduced the risk of death from any cause over the nine-year period the data was collected.

The findings were released online and will appear in the June 14th issue of JAMA's "Archives of Internal Medicine."
