Money for Abilene Minds to Dwindle

By: Megan Dobbs
Updated: February 17, 2011
State funded mental health facilities like the Betty Hardwick Center in Abilene will likely see big budget cuts this year. According to the Mental Health Association in Abilene, Betty Hardwick's budget could take a 25 to 30% hit.

Thursday was Mental Health Day in Austin.  Representatives from M.H.A.A. went to the capitol a couple of weeks ago to encourage legislators to try to protect as much funding as possible.

M.H.A.A. says, if Betty Hardwick loses that much funding, it would amount to more untreated residents, which has the potential to lead to more crime. By the end of the year, Texas will likely be 50th among states when it comes to funding for mental health resources.

M.H.A.A. encourages concerned residents to write to legislators about the issue.
