We need all hands on deck to deal with this fire, he said.
Kampfer now estimates the fire burned 5,800 acres of land; a much smaller amount than the 22,000 estimated yesterday. The Texas Forest Service has that number closer to 10,000 acres. It could be that flames hop-scotched across a larger area, leaving some portions of land flame-free.
The fire likely has not affected areas of search in the Dunn case, but volunteer searchers may be affected by the current hot spots that continue to smolder after the fire.
Thirteen homes were burned in the fire. The likely cause of the fire was power lines at a pumpjack that crashed together in the high winds causing a spark, which was exacerbated by 50 to 60 mile-per-hour winds.
