State Considers Ban on Texting While Driving

By: Laura Kellerman
Updated: August 22, 2012
Later today the House Transportation Committee will consider a bill to ban texting while driving statewide.

The committee is expected to hear testimony from the family of Alex Brown, a teenager from Wellman who was killed in a car crash while texting.

The Brown family has traveled around Texas, including to Abilene, to encourage people to put down their phones while driving.

The family recently received a brand new home from Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

There are five bills submitted this session which would ban texting while driving.
pretty soon they'll consider banning eating in your car, or carrying crying p[censored]engers, like children, or how about playing the radio or CD. All these are distractions....pick one. Which one is next for the government to crack down on?
Let them crack down on all of them if it means saving lives. According to the National Transportation Department, an average reaction time of fifty-five (55) feet is required to stop at forty (40) miles per hour when not distracted (this includes stomping on the break pedal and stopping on asphalt). When distracted, that reaction time was down to one-hundred seventy feet (170). This included texting while driving, eating, applying makeup, etc (interview on Rueders). If you're doing anything aside from driving, pull your car over! It DOES save lives!!
