The top matchups begin at Shotwell Stadium. The Abilene High Eagles host Midland High in District 3-5A. The Eagles handed Midland their only loss in district play last year. Abilene High scored a touchdown in every quarter and they beat the Bulldogs, 28 to 18 at Grande Communications Stadium. This year, Abilene High is picked to finish in 2nd place in District 3-5A. Quarterback is a question mark for the Eagles heading into the season. Evan Abbe and Nate Kittley are battling for that spot. Midland High is expected to go to the playoffs after finishing 3rd.

Now to District 3-2A Division 1. The Ballinger Bearcats and the Bangs get together in Bangs. In 2010, Ballinger scored a touchdown in the 3rd quarter to take the lead and they ended up beating the Dragons, 14 to 7. Both teams ended the season at 5 and 1 in district play, tied with Merkel for the District crown. This year, The Bearcats with 9 positions filled with returning starters, and the Dragons, with 10 starters back, will be fighting for the 2nd place spot in the district.

2-time state finalist Goldthwaite hits the road in our 3rd top matchup in week 8 of the 2011 season. The Eagles make the trip north to Winters in District 13-A Division 1. Goldthwaite beat the Blizzards 31 to nothing on their way to the district title and an eventual appearance in the state championship game. Winters went to the 2nd round of the playoffs after finishing 3rd in the district. Both teams are picked to go to the playoffs in 2011
