Chester Smith devoted his life to protecting birds along the Gulf Coast of Texas.  He has a man-made island named for him where several species of birds reside.  Colonial Water birds like the Brown Pelican, Great Egret, and Black Crowned Heron have grown in numbers over the past 20 years, thanks to Chester and Chester's Island.

Chester's Island is a have for 18 species of birds and is managed by the National Audubon Society.  Chester was the Island Warden for more than 20 years, and was a great ambassador for the birds.

Sadly, Chester passed away on June 26, 2011.  He was 90 years old.
