Commissioners Say 'No' to Texting While Driving

By: Snyder Daily News
Updated: August 22, 2012
Scurry County employees seen texting while driving in a county-owned vehicle or riding without a seatbelt and receiving a ticket will face disciplinary action following a vote by the commissioners court this morning.

Both violations of the new county policy will result in disciplinary action by the department head or elected official beginning today.

The court also amended the per diem allowance for employees traveling and employees can be reimbursed for the actual amount provided the cost does not exceed the per diem allowance.

The new rates are $12 for the morning meal, $16 for the noon meal and $20 for the evening meal.

A revised cost of living adjustment (COLA) amendment to be based on the Social Security adjustment for the current year was tabled.

The court also expressed displeasure with the current provider for fuel and related items as it voted to terminate the contract with SC Fuels immediately.

Commissioners agreed to contract with McCormick Marketing at its previous bid prices.

The motions were 3-0 as Pct. 1 Commissioner Terry Williams does business with the new provider. The court also took no action on bids for courthouse lighting as none were received.

The county will now work with the best offer from firms that had expressed interest, but did not bid.

Also approved was the proposed tax rate of 39.89 cents per $100 valuation. The court set public hearings on the rate for 10 a.m. Aug. 30 and Sept. 9. The second quarter treasurer's report noted the county had $17,423,101.75 at the end of June, with interest earned of $4,529.46.

One budget amendment was approved for $1,400 in the county clerk's office for a new cattle brand book and the purchase of Bank Note paper for birth and death certificates. Three line item transfers also were approved.

Leslie Light, speaking on behalf of the upcoming John Wayne Film Fest, asked the court to pass a resolution in support of the cancer research fundraiser on Sept. 2-5. The festival will be held at various areas of the county.

The court is expected to act on that at the next meeting.
