A crowd estimated at more than 1,000 people kicked off the high school football season in style Saturday evening at the Bigcountryhomepage.com Sports Tailgate Spectacular at Ashley Furniture Homestore.

The live broadcast and event included interviews and appearances from players and coaches at Abilene High, Cooper High, and Wylie High. It also included performances from area mascots, cheerleaders from Abilene, Cooper, and Wylie, as well as the Cooper Cougarettes and Abilene High Gold Rush.

One lucky fan had the opportunity to toss a football 30 yards through the window of a brand-new Toyota Tundra. If the ball hit the target, she'd get to drive home and keep the $35,000 vehicle. Unfortunately for her, the toss came up about 20 yards short.

The prizes given away included a 42" HDTV, 2 Apple iPads, 3 comforter sets from Ashley Furniture, a queen mattress from Ashley Furniture, 3 pairs of Dallas Cowboys tickets, 5 pairs of Schlitterbahn tickets, 5 pairs of NRH20 water park passes, and dozens of free BCH Sports shirts. Out of the hundreds of people in attendance, a husband and wife won both iPads proving luck was certainly on their side.

If random contests at a party are any indication of how the season will play out, Abilene High may have an advantage. AHS mascot Champ won the mascot dance off finals beating out Oscar from Cooper High and Buzz from Aspermont. Additionally, an Abilene High football player won the hot dog eating contest.

"We can't thank everyone enough for coming out and participating in the event," said BCH Sports Director David Robinett. "The crowd was amazing. It was a great way to get the season started!."

"Thanks for such a great turnout at the Tailgate Spectacular," said BCH sports team member Alyssa Orange. "It was an absolute blast!"
