Lorna Gibbons Davis, 81, died December 25, 2007, in Abilene after a long battle with cancer.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Hillcrest Church of Christ with Bill Luttrell and Ray McGlothlin officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Memorial Park directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Born in Fort Worth, Texas on September 6, 1926, Lorna was the daughter of Margaret (Lindsay) and Frank Gibbons. She attended the University of California in Berkley and graduated cum laud from Abilene Christian College in 1949. She continued graduate studies at the University of Texas in Austin. She taught English at the University of Puerto Rico and public school in Midland and Abilene, Texas for several years. She met her future husband,
D. Truitt Davis, at the Church of Christ in Midland and they married August 14, 1954 in Houston, Texas.
A faithful member of Hillcrest Church of Christ, Lorna taught children's Bible classes and was the Ladies Bible Class Coordinator for many years. She also worked as a volunteer for Caring Cancer Ministry in Abilene. She and her husband were long-time supporters of Abilene Christian University and Abilene Christian Schools. They served on the Boards of the Abilene Symphony and the International Christian University. She was an active member of the ACU Acappella Alumni Chorus.
She was preceded in death by her husband and by her parents.
Survivors include: daughters, Lamar Mathews and husband, David Douglas, of Houston, and Lindsay Feller and husband, Larry, of Blacksburg, South Carolina; a son, Lance L. Davis of Abilene; a brother, Frank Lindsay Gibbons and his wife Thelma, of Houston, Texas; and six grandchildren, Jordan and Monica Mathews of Houston, Landon and Laura Feller of Houston, and Lance D. and Joe Davis of Abilene.
Pallbearers include: Lance L. Davis, Jordan Mathews, Landon Feller, Lance D. Davis, Joe Davis and Donald Smithwick.
The family expresses special thanks to Elizabeth Knorring, her dear friend and caregiver.
