Abilene Shopping Scare
It seems like every day we hear about the economy taking a hit...
Now, Big Country shoppers are experiencing the economic slowdown first hand.
Just take a look at this list of stores that recently shutdown or will soon.
From fashion hot-spots like the Gap to low-price superstore Steve & Barrys.
- Gap Outlet Store - Goodys
- Steve & Barrys - Dunlap
- Steinmart
Steinmart corporate officials say the decision is made for a store to close when sales expectations are not met, and current economic conditions pose a challenge for retailers.
Steinmart will close by the end of January, 2009, and Steve and Barrys has yet to announce its closing date.
Local business owners say if more people would participate in the decennial census, it would help them to meet consumers needs. The Abilene Industrial Foundation is beginning a campaign to encourage all residents to respond to the 2010 Census by accurately completing the questionnaire. In 2001, 67% of the Big Country participated. They want more to partake in the upcoming census in order to know and meet the needs of the Abilene community.
