Last February a road rage incident on Sayles Boulevard at South 14th Street, in the middle of the afternoon, took the life of a 21-year-old father of two and left a polarized community in its wake.

That's because an arrest was not immediately made, even though the shooter was detained and taken in for questioning.

Since then, Chris North, the shooter, has been charged with murder, bonded out of jail and is now preparing to face a jury.

To those who witnessed the incident on Feb. 9 said it was unbelievable.

Chris North and Austin David, both armed, crossed paths at Sayles and South 14th with a deadly outcome.

We are still unclear of what led up to their face-to-face meeting at the busy Abilene intersection but what happened at the intersection was in broad daylight in front of several witnesses.

When the pair pulled up to the light to cross South 14th, witnesses say 21-year-old Austin David exited his car followed by Christopher North exiting his truck.

With North's truck in front of David's car, witnesses say David was the first to pull his weapon.

That's when North got back in his truck and so did David, but instead of driving away North put his truck in reverse and backed David's car into the median in the middle of Sayles.

That's when North's outspoken defense attorney Moore, in an interview days after, said David pulled his gun again and shot at North.

North returned fire killing David with a shot to the face.

North was detained but not arrested, setting off a firestorm of criticism aimed at the Abilene Police Department.

The criticism was so intense that APD responded first in a news conference.

A day after the response, and nine days after the road rage incident on Feb. 17, Chris North was indicted by a grand jury on a murder charge and picked up by his attorney at his home and turned himself in at the Taylor County Jail and bonded out just a short time later.

There have been several pretrial matters that have popped up since, one being the defense trying to postpone tomorrow's trial date.
