Investigators are working to determine why a South Abilene home caught fire late Tuesday afternoon.

The fire happened just after 4 p.m. in the 2900 block of  Wyndrock Drive. Abilene firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the vents and chimney of the house.

No one was home at the time, but firefighters did rescue a cat from inside the house.

Officials believe the blaze may have started in a closet and quickly spread to the attic.

The fire did at least $20,000 in damage to the house.
