There's a hidden danger lurking among Halloween costume accessories.

Cosmetic contacts, like corrective lenses, are considered a medical device and must be dispensed by a licensed practitioner only, but remain a popular option at many costume stores.

"It can result in loss of the eye at the worst case scenario," says Dr. Mark Gorovoy, an ophthalmologist. "More commonly, it results in scarring of the cornea and loss of vision."

Dr. Gorovoy doesn't encourage using the cosmetic lenses, but if it's a must-have for Halloween, he recommends users visit an eye doctor first for a fitting.

He also recommends using the lenses only once, and never sharing them.
