New Museum Exihibit to Open on Veterans Day

An exhibit honoring veterans will open at the Scurry County Museum in conjunction with the Veterans Day celebration at Western Texas College Friday.

The exhibit will feature uniforms and artifacts from the Civil War to Operation Desert Storm, the first war with Iraq following that country's invasion of Kuwait.

"We have Confederate papers and currency and we will have the names of service members from Scurry County on the wall," said Director Daniel Schlegel. "We will also have displays honoring the Air Corps."

Schlegel said the exhibit is in its second year and will be an annual event, with the hope that it continues to grow. Many exhibit pieces are rare, including a World War I gas mask donated by Lee Stinson, a former pharmacist in Scurry County, who kept his gear after the war.

Chemical warfare was a major component of World War I, with some 85,000 troops killed by the dispersal of mustard, chlorine and phosgene gasses.
