Big Country Veterans Day Happenings

There are plenty of chances to show appreciation to veterans of the armed forces this weekend all around the Big Country.

Members of the Abilene Founder Lions Club will put out more than 100 flags in Abilene early Friday morning.

ACU will honor their Veteran of the Year at their 11:00 a.m. Chapel service.

Children will be honoring veterans at their respective schools as Bassetti Elementary will hold a hallway parade at 8:00 a.m., while a flag parade at Jackson Elementary gets underway at 9:30.

Madison Middle School is getting in on the act by hosting a Veterans Day assembly at 9:00 a.m.

Abilene Regional Medical Center will be honoring veteran employees at the ARMC Women's Center in Abilene from 10-10:20 a.m.

Texas Roadhouse is offering free lunch to all veterans Friday from 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. All veterans - including all active, retired or former U.S. military - can choose one of 10 entrees, including a 6-ounce sirloin and two sides plus a choice of any Coca-Cola product, sweet tea/iced tea or coffee during lunch. Participants must provide proof of service, including military or VA card, or discharge papers.

A Veterans Day parade will take place in downtown Abilene Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m.

There are plenty of events taking place outside of Abilene as well.

Baird High School will host an assembly and luncheon for active-duty military, veterans and their families in the auditorium starting at 11:00 a.m.

The Texas State Veterans Home is honoring its residents at 2:00 p.m. Friday on location in Big Spring.

A Veterans Day parade will march down the streets of Brownwood beginning Friday at 10:00 a.m. with a program at the Margaret and Stuart Coleman Plaza to follow.

Seniors at Eula High School will be presenting a program in their cafeteria from 9-11:00 a.m. Friday morning to honor veterans, and students from Loraine high school will also host a program at 9:00 a.m. in Loraine ISD's new gym.

An exhibit honoring veterans will open at the Scurry County Museum in Snyder along with the Veterans Day celebration at Western Texas College Friday at 10:00 a.m.

TSTC in Sweetwater will hold a National Day of Remembrance ceremony beginning at 1:00 p.m. Also, digital signs at all four campuses (Abilene, Brownwood, Breckenridge and Sweetwater) will scroll the names of all soldiers killed in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars all day Friday.

A Veterans Day lunch will take place from 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. at the Rock Hotel in Winters, and the Walmart in Stamford will serve breakfast to veterans from 8-9:00 a.m. Friday morning followed by a Veterans Day tribute at the Stamford High School auditorium.
