Wednesday Morning Update:
At a meeting this week, the Abilene Parks and Recreation Board approved plans to build the splash park.

Plans call for the facility to be built at Abilene's Nelson Park.

Additional money needs to be raised before construction on the splash park begins.

Original Story:
If you're looking for a place to beat the heat in hot summer months and entertain the kids, Abilene will soon have just the place. Together 2011, a committee of nearly two dozen partners, has proposed a splash grounds for Nelson Park.

"It was a year long project for businesses to come together and try to do things to make people proud to live in Abilene. It was in conjunction with the celebration of Abilene's 130th birthday."

The area will cover 3,000 square feet and boast several aquatic play features for both younger and older children. The project was dreamed up after a survey of young students was taken.

"And one of the things that kept coming up, which has come up within the last several years, is they wanted something to do with the water park."

The project will cost $600,000. Half of that has already been raised.

"This was the most cost efficient and water efficient thing we could do for their desire to have something in Abilene that pertained to a water park."
