Postal Service Ready To Move Forward With Expected Cuts

In an attempt to cut costs, ten mail processing centers in Texas are among 252 nationwide that will close in a money-saving move by the government.

That includes the processing center in Abilene.

Centers in Austin, Beaumont, Bryan, Dallas, Tyler, Lufkin, McAllen and two facilities in Waco will also close.

A community meeting about the closing of the Abilene processing center is set for next Tuesday Dec. 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the Abilene Civic Center.

Organizers are hoping for a big crowd to help them convince the postal service to keep the center open.

The 252 proposed closings represent roughly half of the nation's nearly 500 mail processing centers.

More that 3,000 post offices may close and thousands of USPS employees could be looking for other jobs.

In a statement, USPS Vice President David Williams said the agency must reduce operating costs by $20 billion by 2015 in order to return to profitability.

He said the proposed changes will allow for "significant consolidation of the postal network in terms of facilities, processing equipment, vehicles and employee workforce."
