AISD Strives to Keep Kids Healthy During Winter Break

By: Marlisa Goldsmith
Updated: December 6, 2011
Abilene ISD is making sure students have access to healthy meals, even over the holiday break.

The district offers a mini-semester for students who want to earn school credit over their winter break. During that time, the Abilene High School cafeteria will provide students with breakfast and lunch.

Nutritionists say the likelihood of many students getting a balanced meal declines when they are not in school.

It is AISD's goal to continue to provide a nutritional diet for these students who might not get it otherwise.

"That is another way that these students who are coming to school during their Christmas break to learn, then they're also getting that balanced meal which also helps them to learn during that time," says Joann Knox of the AISD Child Nutrition Department.

Breakfast and lunch will be provided from Dec 22 through Jan 4 at Abilene High.
