Firefighters were called to the rescue just after 10 a.m. Thursday after a family member heard Jorge Herrera, 20, calling out.
Firefighters used a long truck ladder as a pulley to bring Herrera to the top and out of the chimney, after using a soapy mixture to slip through the narrow chimney.
Battalion Chief Van Riviere said the stories vary on how Herrera got himself in such a tight spot.
One is that he was trying to clean the chimney, and the other is, he was trying to sneak in after curfew.
For Riviere and his crew, rescuing someone from a chimney was a first, the chief said.
As for Herrera, he was a little scuffed, slightly sooty, and too embarrassed to talk.
