Last Minute Shoppers Fear More Than Stolen Valuables

"I'm always, not only only during Christmas but i'm always looking out because people are crazy. They'll do anything these days," says Shyan Whisenhunt, a mall shopper.

Last week, the Abilene Police Department warned folks of the dangers of leaving property in your car.

"During the holidays, relatively speaking we do have an increase in property crime, even though we're down 11 percent during the Christmas season," says John Clark, a detective with the Abilene Police Department.

But people around the mall are less worried about material things and more worried about their own well being

Shauna Martin, who is shopping during the holidays says, "I don't really think about leaving stuff in my car as much as I do like when I get in my car real quick and kind of watch for other people."

The Mall of Abilene has partnered with local authorities to give you a list of tips to make sure safety is everyone's top priority. They are telling you to plan to shop during daylight hours, avoid carrying cash and to avoid crowded areas as much as possible. They also suggest parking in a safe place with plenty of light if you do have to shop at night and never hesitate to ask for security to walk you to your vehicle.

Property crimes are down considerably across the area as a whole but that doesn't mean to be any less alert, especially when it comes to your well being.
