Monks coffee shop has been a downtown Abilene favorite for some time now, but there's more to Monks Coffee Shop than just great coffee. As they put it, the shop provides a retreat from the dullest segments of life and a step into a creative environment.

So what is it about Monks that makes everyone who goes there fall in love? Owner, Jerry Hendricks says, it's not just a fabulous cup of Joe.

"I think part of it is that we're downtown and there's something special about getting to be downtown in that neat culture," says Hendricks. "But once you come inside, you feel as if maybe you're in something that's similar to an Austin coffee shop."

Indeed, one look around the shop is all you need to get a taste of the eclectic and comfortable environment where college kids and even adults come just to hang out.

Monks is also a hot spot for live music in the Key City.  The coffee shop hosts at least 4 to 5 shows a semester, along with live music on Friday nights during the school semester, and an open mic night on Thursdays.

The coffee shop even created it's own "Keep Abilene Boring" T-Shirts, which have become a hit around town. KTAB 4u is giving away two of these shirts Friday morning, all you have to do for a chance to win, is "like" the Monks Coffee Shop Facebook page.  But how did this trend start?

"It starts of course with the Austin shirt, 'Keep Austin Weird,'" says Hendricks. "For us it came while sitting in a coffee shop in Waco and reading over their story line for 'Keep Waco Wacko' and we were just talking over ideas and we came up with this one."

Hendricks says despite the shirts sarcastic message, their goal is anything but labeling the key city as "boring."

And naturally, Monks wouldn't be Monks without their famous coffee, which is roasted by an Austin based company specializing in Brazilian coffees.

"We specialize in a Brazilian blend once a week," says Hendricks, "but then also just the more popular ones that other people are accustomed to."
