Every day is a busy day at Tyler cleaners.
And just outside, an even busier South 14th Street.
"It's a very busy street. It's one of our busiest in town," Says Employee Anna Alvarado.
Alvarado would know. She drives it every day to and from work.
It's also an area that was targeted this year, among others, by the Abilene Police Department, in an effort to decrease the number of traffic accidents.
"The purpose is to get the public to change the way their driving, pay a little bit more attention sometimes, and educating them on the danger of some of the streets as far as the amount of entrances and exits," Explains Sgt. Richy Waggoner of the APD traffic division.
The strategy was new this year, and a huge success.
"2011 is one of the lowest years we've had as far as collisions in probably, at least the last five years," Says Waggoner.
The APD reports 3,435 collisions this year
Which is almost 277 less than 2010.
That's a 7.46 percent total drop.
"Which is above what we were aiming for which was a 3 percent reduction from our strategic business plan," Says Waggoner.
The increased presence of officers along busy streets like this one, doesn't bother Alvarado, who says it benefits not only the cleaner's customers, but everyone passing by.
"They're doing a good job in keeping it down, and making their presence noticed to slow down. There are families on the road!" Says Alvarado.
It wont stop here. The APD plans to continue this strategy to make 2012 even safer
