"Anytime the train is stopped you know it's either somebody hit a vehicle or hit a pedestrian," says Paul Bermea.

In this case, it was a pedestrian, who turned out to be Bermea's cousin.

"I couldn't believe it. I just could not believe the way it happened," Bermea explains.

According to Tye Police Department, 21-year-old Aubrey Mendez was hit by a train Saturday night.

Bermea says, "According to the story she was chasing after her dog that she loved a lot."

"She loved her dog and she was trying to get her dog and she gave her life for that dog. She loved it that much," explains Billie Roys.

Roys is a friend of the family who says Mendez was a sweet girl who will be missed dearly.

"I went over to visit with the grandmother that raised her after church and they're very devastated," says Roys.

The tragedy hits almost too close to home for Bermea who buried his son just a few years ago. Which is why he built a cross for Mendez to stand in her memory.

"I've already been through this. I lost my own son too, so I know. It's just not right, somebody that young to go out," Bermea continues.

As the family mourns, the community continues to come together to support them during their time of loss.

"We're just like a big family out here and we all suffer with the family," says Roys.

Many questions remain unanswered as authorities continue to investigate, but until answers are provided, the city of Tye will stand together to get through this tragedy.
