AISD to Welcome New Computers for Students

By: Marlisa Goldsmith
Updated: January 25, 2012
Abilene ISD students will soon have better computers to work on at school.

This year AISD is replacing 1600 of their computers with refurbished ones that will cost the district less than half the price of purchasing brand new computers and bringing the grand total to about $674,000.

The district decided to put this technology initiative in effect because the machines students were using were obsolete and extremely slow.

"Some of the applications that were running require a faster processor speed," says Chief Officer of Technology Mark Gapehart. "They require more memory, and therefore they were not suitable. So what this means for our students as well as our staff is that they will have faster computers."

All 1600 computers are expected to be in place by the end of May 2012.

The district will also be upgrading their computer software to Windows 7 and Microsoft Office 2010.
