Abilene City Council passed the first reading of a proposal by the Abilene Police Department to make changes that will allow for more officers to be hired.

Chief Stan Standridge is looking to increase the number of patrol officers to 189, but to do so a city ordinance currently allowing only 184 officers needs to be changed.

Standridge also hopes to get rid of one assistant police chief position, which is currently vacant, and add a public information officer.

The proposed new ordinance must now go to a public hearing before it can be approved.
