Exploring Abilene: 32nd Annual World of Wheels

For the 32nd time, the longtime Abilene favorite World of Wheels will roll into the Big Country. Abilene is deep in history this weekend; enrich your knowledge of the past by finding out how locals impacted certain historical events. Read on to decide how you will spend your weekend!
The World of Wheels is back in Abilene this weekend! The 32nd automotive show will be held at the Abilene Civic Center and offers fun for everyone. Vintage, classic cars, trucks and motorcycles will be on display; last year's show included several celebrity guest appearances, including former Texas Longhorns athlete Jordan Shipley, Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders and the winner from the popular NBC show, "The Biggest Loser," Danny Cahill. 2012's World of Wheels event promises more of the same! Times are Friday, 6 to 10 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday, noon to 7 p.m. Admission costs vary. Have questions? Call promoter Bill Moeller at 818-999-3212.
The 12th Armored Division Memorial Division Museum will hold a Week of Remembrance in honor of the role the men of the 793rd Armored Field Artillery Battalion played in the liberation of a concentration camp near Landsberg, Germany. They will hold seminars about the holocaust, display exhibits of concentration camp artifacts and offer a tour showcasing the Division's role in the liberation. Art by local and student artists relevant to the Holocaust will also be exhibited. Cost will be $1-3 per person. The Week of Remembrance will run from Jan. 23 thru Jan 28 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will hold a special Holocaust Remembrance Ceremony on Jan. 27 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tours will be offered, a special candle lighting ceremony will be held and Max Glauben, a holocaust survivor, will speak on his experiences surviving four concentration camps. You still have a chance to get a laugh at the Abilene Community Theatre production of Love, Sex, and the I.R.S Thursday thru Saturday. Watch two male, out of work musicians room together in New York City try to save money by filing their tax returns listing them as a married couple. Chaos ensues when the IRS sends an investigator to check out the happy husband and wife, a fiance and ex-girlfriend make an appearance to stir the pot, as well as one of the gentleman's mother. Showtime starts at 7:30 pm. Tickets for adults are $10, students, seniors and active military are $8 and children 12 and under are $5. Swing by Hardin-Simmons University Johnson's Building on Friday evening at 7:30 to attend the Guy Caldwell Western Heritage lecture series, featuring Dr. Tai Kreidler, deputy director of the Southwest Collection and Special Collections at the Libraries of Texas Tech. Kreidler discusses the great scholars of West Texas. "A cresting time of scholarship, creativity and achievement sprang forth throughout West Texas during the 20th century," Kreidler says. "The last frontier was the crossroads for many questing and irrepressible folks who were not content with their lives, so they came west." The Guy Caldwell Series began in 2006 to promote and preserve the legacy of the West that is closely tied to the Big Country. Admission is free. Celebrate with the Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra for the "Celebrations" concert on Saturday night at 8 p.m at the Abilene Civic Center. This concert features Danzon No. 2 by Marquez, Glazunov's Violin Concerto in A minor and the beloved Symphony No. 5 by Tchaikovsky. Rachel Barton Pine will be the showcased violinist. Pine has received worldwide acclaim for her performances, the ability to connect with her audience and her virtuosic technical mastery. Get involved in a good cause this weekend! The Special Olympics Texas Polar Plunge is this weekend at the Courtyard Marriott heated outdoor pool! Support a great cause and participate in this neat fundraising event that keeps all money raised local; all money goes to support local Special Olympics Texas Athletes.
