Sweetwater Church Opens Doors for SNAP Clients

When the City Commission presented the deteriorating condition and temporary closing of the local Senior Nutrition Activities Program (SNAP) building for reconstruction this January, a local church stepped up to fill the void left by the facilities.

Highland Heights United Methodist Church has opened its doors for SNAP attendees to use as a temporary meeting location. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays, folks can bring their own lunch or their purchased meal from SNAP (the kitchen remains open during this time) and dine in the church's fellowship hall.

Guests can also socialize, visit with friends and participate in games while at the church.

The temporary closure and construction was prompted by a report compiled by city engineers, which noted that the "roof is unsafe." Other inspections stated that leaks have been seen when rain or other precipitation falls, as well as possible problems found with the structure.

During their Jan. 10, 2012 meeting, the City Commission approved the authorization of city staff to seek bids for construction on the senior program, which will help the city determine what steps to take during the process.

The church understands the importance of SNAP within the community for senior citizens, thus taking the initiative from a physical perspective.

In the meantime, as the church serves in this manner, they are also praying for the program and swift reconstruction and renovation efforts for the SNAP facilities.
