Merkel Police Officer Resigns After Demands Not Met by City

By: Josh Berry
Updated: February 2, 2012
A Merkel police officer at the center of recent controversy has left the force again, but this time under his own will.

Billy Spears was initially let go by the City of Merkel for running for a county office, which created a stir within the city and caused Merkel to rehire Spears.

He took the position back under the condition that the city fire the new police chief and city manager, but the city took no action and this morning Billy Spears resigned.

Merkel Mayor Mike McLeod says they hoped things would settle down between the city and Spears, but at this point they are forced to cut their losses, start fresh and find a new position.

Sounds like Merkel. Theyve had three city manager in the last 6 years. Is the current one still doing the job for free?
