Since September, the Abilene Housing Authority has pulled 900 people off the waiting list to put into the housing choice voucher program, which assists low income families to afford safe and sanitary housing in the private market.
And the housing authority is currently looking for more people in need. There are 1486 vouchers and about 91 percent of them are currently being leased. This year, the voucher program received an exceptional distinction.
"We've been rated again, for the fourth consecutive year as high performer," says Abilene Housing Authority's Gene Reed. "High performer is the highest status that you can achieve as a housing authority for your housing choice voucher program."
Individuals can sign up online and automatically be placed on a list of their choice.
