Throughout this month, American Heart Month, KRBC will be highlighting ways to avoid the nation's number one killer -- heart disease.

A common procedure used at Abilene's medical centers to detect heart conditions is cardiac catheterization.  Doctors can examine a patient's arteries by entering the body through the groin or the wrist, known as the trans-radial approach.  A substance is injected into the vessel to reveal any abnormalities, some that may have even been preceded with few or no symptoms.

Abilene Regional Medical Center will hold "Go Red for Women" luncheon to raise awareness of heart disease, which is especially prominent in women.  That event is February 15th.
