"If crime is down we're going to be down a little bit. If crime goes up, we're going to be up," explains Executive Director Rick Dorman, of Abilene Crime Stoppers.

The less crime there is the less reports Crime Stoppers will receive, which explains why the number of tips received, arrests made, cases cleared, and fugitive arrests all declined.

Tips received declined 12.9%, arrest went down 5.2%, cases cleared went down 16.8%, and fugitives arrested declined 2%.

Dorman says, "Our program does follow the crime trend to some degree, but we're going to continue to work forward and try to even lessen the amount of burden on our city and communities."

Crime Stoppers started in March of 1981, and they have seen the program progress over the course of 30 years.

"We have come a long way. We came from a program when it first started out strictly with just a hot line and that's all. That was the only way a person could contact us," says Dorman.

Now, citizens can go online to leave a secure tip, text a tip, and even download the tip submit application on a smart phone.

"They'll make the report to Crime Stoppers anonymously, we'll get the crime solved," Dorman says.

Dorman explains the Crime Stoppers program works for several reasons.

One of the major reasons being the collaboration between the public, Crime Stoppers, and Abilene Police Department, something that is needed to make the program a success.

Dorman says, "With all of us working together we can make a better and safer place for all of us to live and work."
