Not even the rain could stop their cause.
Men, women and even children from all over the Big Country gave up their Saturday morning for Stamford Memorial Hospital's Second Annual 5k Run. The race was set to commemorate Heart Health Awareness month.
"People, after they've had open-heart surgery get to come out here and do cardiac rehab for six weeks," said Pasty Richards, Director of Home Health at the hospital. "It's to go towards more equipment for that."
Some 50 runners took on the wet terrain to help sponsor the hospital's cardiac rehab unit. Many ran in honor of a loved one with a heart-related illness. Elizabeth Miller walked for her father.
"Since my father passed away I've really focused more on exercise because I had kind of exercised, but now I'm more consistent with it," said Miller.
Juan Collazo ran and won for his grandfather.
"He was always there for me," he said.
Whether they ran or walked, participants had plenty of encouragement to help them get through the three mile course, which began and ended at the hospital.
"Oh my goodness! This is crazy weather, crazy runners come out for this, so we're just happy," said Richards.
While winning may have not been the ultimate goal, the runners were more than happy to cross the finish line knowing there would be drier and warmer times ahead of them. In the end the hospital raised close to $1,000 for the cardiac rehab unit.
