Hundreds of Roping Riders Compete in Abilene

Saturday, people from all over the state came to Abilene for a special competition.

The Original Team Roping association's District Championships were held at the Taylor County Expo Center.

The competition will run through Sunday.

More than four hundred riders came to participate in the sport which is oftentimes characterized as a sport for extreme risk takers.

"It's a pretty expensive sport and it's really difficult," said OTRA Member, Lee Percivill. "It's a dangerous sport to a certain degree, because you could lose fingers, hands all kinds of things in situations. We try to take care of everybody and we try to make sure we've got the right person in the right class."

Riders are divided into distinct levels, depending on their skill and experience.

Range from people who've never ridden a horse to competing professionals.
