Political Sign Thefts on the Rise

Theft of political signs is becoming a problem in Stephens County as well as throughout the city of Breckenridge.

Even though it might be considered a prank to some, it actually is a crime.

Breckenridge Police Chief Larry Mahan said his department has been actively pursuing the culprits, who could be arrested for theft.

Stephens County Sheriff Dan Young, who is running for re-election said he's lost about 18 or 19 signs.

"The majority have been in the city, but there have been candidates who have lost some outside of town in different places in the county."

Mac Speer, Ed Russell and Wayne White, who are all vying for the County Commissioner Precinct No. 1 position have all experienced loss of signage, while Young and Sheriff candidate Billy Wade have also experienced lost signs.
