An accident involving several cars shut down Interstate 20 and forced one person to be airlifted to the hospital.

At least six vehicles and nearly a dozen people were involved in the accident east of Sweetwater around 2:00 Sunday afternoon.

Officials at the scene say one vehicle lost control and jumped over the cement barrier to cause the initial accident.

A second major accident resulted from traffic stopping to stare at the initial wreck, or "rubber-necking," according to officials.

Crews airlifted one passenger from the scene, while two others were taken to Sweetwater for treatment.

There is currently no word on the extent of the injuries.

Both lanes of Interstate 20 were shut down for over an hour due to the accidents.
